As one of the oldest nation-states in Europe, Portugal is home to many historically significant cities, namely Lisbon and Oporto. In both cities, monumental displays of empire, power and reatness live side by side with meandering streets filled with medieval buildings. Their history is one of occupation and conquest, sieges and peace, riches and famine, monarchy and anarchy, diversity and tradition. Furthermore, having been settled in 1200 B.C., Lisbon has the honour of being considered the second oldest European capital.
Its place in world history is such that after the 1755 earthquake that devastated the city, European intellectuals like Voltaire questioned aloud the existence of a God that allowed such horrors to happen.
Lisbon and Oporto can also be characterized as spaces of contemporary intervention that aim to make them more liveable for locals and more attractive to outsiders. It is in this context that the city has emerged as a privileged site for business activity and social research aimed at fostering entrepreneurship and/or diversity; a location for design schools and museums as well as for thriving street art and activism; an inspiring knowledge space that promotes education and attracts international students; a place for discovery, investment and tourism; a city that turns to nature to enhance physical well-being.
For the 2018 the 12th edition of UE/ IADE-UE/ IPAM International Week we examine the theme of the city as a space of interventions. We propose that interventions can be small and large; utilitarian in their scope or seeking to promote knowledge, culture or leisure; focused or interdisciplinary. We invite you to come and share your experience and expertise with our academic and staff community. We welcome proposals that address and go beyond the following questions:
What is the role of design in building liveable urban spaces?
How can business schools and the social sciences generate knowledge about and for cities and their inhabitants?
How can we create and promote spaces for learning and education in the cities of the future?
What kinds of tourism(s) do we want in the future?
How can we create cities that promote health and physical activity?
How can marketing contribute to generate value in both urban, local and global settings?
